Black-eyed Susan is a cheerful wildflower with bright golden-yellow petals that radiate around a deep brown or nearly black center, which gives the plant its name. The flowers look a lot like small, simple daisies and typically sit atop tall, slightly hairy green stems.
The plant grows in clumps and can range from about one to three feet tall depending on conditions. Its leaves are rough in texture, usually lance-shaped, and arranged alternately along the stems.
It blooms mainly in summer and can continue into early fall, creating a long-lasting display of warm color in gardens, roadsides, and open fields. Black-eyed Susan is native to Texas and is well adapted to heat, drought, and poor soils, which is why it’s commonly seen growing in the wild. Deer resistant.
