Wild red strawberry refers to small native strawberry species such as  Fragaria vesca that produce tiny, intensely flavored red berries. The fruits are much smaller than cultivated strawberries, often about the size of a fingernail, but they are very aromatic and sweet.

The plants grow low to the ground as creeping runners, forming spreading mats of green foliage. The leaves are trifoliate, meaning each leaf is made up of three serrated leaflets that have a soft, slightly hairy texture.

In spring and early summer, they produce small white five-petaled flowers with yellow centers, which later develop into the bright red berries. The fruits sit close to the soil surface, often partially hidden under the leaves.

Wild strawberries thrive in woodland edges, meadows, and grassy areas, preferring well-drained soil and partial sun to light shade. They are both ornamental and edible, valued for their delicate fruit, groundcover ability, and wildlife appeal, as birds and small animals also feed on the berries.
